Mug cakes are back—thanks to TikTok
These sweet treats are easy to make—and you can carry them around anywhere too
May 27, 2020
After scouring my kitchen one time for a filling midnight snack and failing to find a packed treat, I settled for the next best (and hassle-free) thing: a quick and easy-to-make no-bake dessert.
As usual, the TikTok community has an answer for that, and this time, it comes in the form of mug cakes. Although it has been around for a while, this dessert has resurfaced as a trend thanks to a viral two-ingredient Oreo recipe going around the video-sharing platform recently.

To make a mug cake, all you have to do is microwave a mug filled with cake batter. You’ll know it’s done after 50 seconds or when it’s achieved the gooeyness you like. Let it cool for a few minutes and voila, you can start digging in.
To make chocolate mug cakes, all you need are flour, cocoa, baking powder, sugar, milk, vegetable oil and vanilla essence.

Behold: the infamous Mug Cake recipe! 🍰☕️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I posted this on stories recently and you guys went b.a.n.a.n.a.s for it (@gwenstefani would be proud 🍌😂). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So I thought I would share my fave #mugcake recipe (originally from @tablefortwo) and modified ever so slightly so you can all hit SAVE! on this post for when you get those sweet treat cravings (ahem…multiple times a day for me 😅). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ingredients – this makes ONE, but you can double/triple whatever!: 🍰1/4 cup plain flour 🍰2 tbsp cocoa 🍰1/4 tsp baking powder 🍰2 tbsp sugar (my mum SWEARS by halving sugar in recipes, so I do – can confirm, it still tastes DELISH!). 🍰1/4 cup + 1 tbsp milk (only add this 1 tbsp after you’ve doubled/tripled etc) 🍰2 tbsp vegetable oil (I use rice bran as it has less flavour than olive oil) 🍰1 tsp vanilla essence (again, my modification, but I always add it to my cakes!) 🍰OPTIONAL: add choc chips, Nutella, PB or a mini Mars bar in the middle for extra fun! OR remove the cocoa and add some blueberries instead! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pop dry ingredients in first to a bowl, then mix in the wet ingredients until it’s nice and smooth (no clumps allowed 🙅♀️). Pour the mixture into your favourite mug and microwave for 50ish seconds (40 if you like gooey – you might need to test this on different mug thicknesses though…but eating your mistakes ain’t bad!) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Next? Step back and get prepared for the best instant dessert of your life! 😍 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I may have lost count of how many of these #mugcakes I’ve made recently. #dontjudgeme 😂😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pretty cake mugs featured by @silcre__
A simple recipe for vanilla mug cakes also uses unsalted butter, milk, vanilla extract, sugar, all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt. From there, you can customize by adding in some Oreos to make a cookies and cream version or mix in some matcha or coffee powder.
You can also try different combinations of toppings like chocolates and marshmallows or fruits like lemon and blueberry.
Lastly, here’s a quick tip: use a large mug. Aside from giving you more cake, it will prevent spillage as you microwave the cake. And, of course, make sure that the mug you’re using is microwave-safe.
