In today’s news, Henry Sy Sr. who has held the title as the richest Filipino for more than a decade has been replaced by real estate mogul Manny Villar in the latest Forbes Magazine’s list of the wealthiest people on the planet.
Sy’s legacy, however, still prevails in the list despite his death earlier this year. All six of his children handling different businesses related to SM Holdings Corp. lead by Hans Sy—who ranked #962 with a net worth of $2.5B—are included in the list.
Villar, with a net worth of $5.5B for his businesses such as Starmalls and Vista Land, ranked #317. The 69-year-old was inducted into the list in 2015 with a net worth of $1.6B.
Others who made it to this year’s roster are:
- JG Summit’s John Gokongwei Jr. – #343, $5.1 billion
- International Container Terminal Services Inc.’s Enrique Razon Jr. – #379, $4.8 billion
- Asia Brewery’s Lucio Tan – #436, $4.4 billion
- Jollibee founder Tony Tan Caktiong and family – #529, $3.9 billion
- San Miguel Corp.’s Ramon Ang – #775, $2.9 billion
- Megaworld’s Andrew Tan – #838, $2.7 billion
According to Forbes Magazine’s tally, there are currently 2,153 billionaires all over the world this year, 55 fewer compared to 2018.
195 new billionaires have been added to the list lead by 53 new ones from China (including Hong Kong), who leads the countries with the most number at more than 300.
Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, is the world’s richest man for the second year in a row with $131B to his name.
