The National Museum Planetarium to hold free shows for women on Mar. 8

Calling all astronomy-obsessed women: the National Museum Planetarium, which reopened last year, announced on Facebook that it will be having free shows for women on Mar. 8 to commemorate International Women’s Day. It also specifically pointed out that the offer is open to all women, cis and trans women alike.

It’s great to see a public institution be so openly inclusive, considering that the country’s SOGIE Bill is still languishing in Congress, with Tito Sotto denying that trans women are women. (Transphobia: yet another harmful thing rampant in Philippine politics)

The museum also released a calendar of activities for Women’s Month, including lectures and demonstrations at its regional branches in Iloilo and Marinduque, among others. Excluding the free planetarium shows, here is the lineup:

  1. A solo exhibit by Filipino-Canadian artist Lani Maestro from Mar. 3 to May 31 at the National Museum of Anthropology
  2. A lecture and demo on nito weaving at the National Museum Marinduque-Romblon Regional Museum from Mar. 20 to 21
  3. A lecture on women in the field of botany on Mar. 20 at the National of Museum of Natural History
  4. A lecture and demonstration on traditional Ifugao weaving on Mar. 24 and 25 at the Cordillera Regional Museum
  5. A lecture and demonstration on Santa Barbara, Iloilo’s bobbin lace-making tradition on Mar. 28 and 29 at the Western Visayas Regional Museum in Iloilo
  6. A lecture on women’s contribution, involvement and visibility in the field of archaeology on Mar. 30 at the National Museum of Archaeology.
