ICYMI: International Women’s Day is happening this weekend and this year’s theme is #EachforEqual, a call to help create a gender equal world.
Here in the Philippines, there are many events to look forward to in celebration of this observance (that is apart from commercialized, coopted sales masked to celebrate women), including an annual all-women art fair organized by independent Filipina feminist press Gantala Press.
Now on its fourth year, “Gandang-ganda sa Sariling Gawa!” (GGSSG!) continues to organize women creators to showcase their works such as books, zines, stickers, illustrations, and comics. This year, GGSSG! tackles the intersection of feminism and the environment. Over 30 artists and collectives will be taking part in the expo.
Apart from an expo where creators will be selling their art and craft, there will also be a forum on women and climate justice happening on Mar. 7, Saturday at the Commission on Human Rights complex in Commonwealth Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City. Various non-profit and advocacy groups like Amihan Women, Bai Indigenous Women’s Network, Commission on Human Rights Gender Office, PAMALAKAYA-Pilipinas fisherfolk and Youth Advocates for Climate Action in the Philippines. will share their insights.
Last month, Gantala Press set up a page on crowdfunding site GoGetFunding to raise funds to build its first physical headquarters—and the first feminist bookstore in the country.
