As the country continues to grapple with the pandemic, resumption of classes in higher education institutions (HEIs) will depend on how classes are carried out. In his May 14 virtual briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque announced guidelines on the resumption of classes for colleges and universities, approved by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).
Colleges and universities utilizing full online education can open anytime, while those using flexible education modes can open anytime in August. In-person classes, however, will not be allowed until Aug. 31.
For areas covered by the general community quarantine, HEIs that will be conducting significant in-person learning modes may open classes not earlier than Sept. 1. Additionally, private HEIs are encouraged to adjust their academic calendars and open classes in August.
“Patuloy po ang gagawing review ng Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) sa mga kondisyon at pakikipag-usap sa mga higher educational institutions,” Roque added.
Last week, the Department of Education announced that classes in the primary and secondary levels will open on Aug. 24 and end on Apr. 30, 2021. Private schools can opt to begin online classes as early as June, subject to approval of the IATF-EID.
