As of last night, July 6, the Philippines has the second highest number of COVID-19 cases in all of Southeast Asia with a total of 46,333 infections. Indonesia continues to top the region with 64,958 cases.

However, the Philippines still has the highest number of active cases with 32,845, followed by Indonesia’s 31,798 and Singapore’s 4,516.

This comes after the country logged over 2,000 additional COVID-19 cases for two consecutive days. On July 6, the Department of Health (DOH) reported that the number of additional cases totaled to 2,099. On July 5, the Philippines recorded an all-time high, single-day increase of cases with 2,434 infections.

The DOH reasons that the recent surge in the number of COVID-19 cases can be linked to the increased contact among people due to the easing of quarantine measures. The majority of the new cases were recorded in Metro Manila—which has been under general community quarantine since the beginning of June.

In a public address yesterday, July 6, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire reminded the public to help stop the spread of the virus by observing the necessary health protocols and preventive measures such as wearing protective masks, physical distancing and frequent handwashing.

As of writing, the Philippines has a total of 12,185 recoveries and 1,303 deaths. Worldwide, the total number of COVID-19 cases has reached 11,731,481.
