Senior citizens and PWDs can now serve in several Mcdonald’s branches in Manila

Last month, Manila city mayor Francisco Moreno ordered fast-food chains to employ senior citizens and PWDs as crew members. Now, many of these restaurants are creating a partnership with the city.

It was just last week when Jollibee started to create more work opportunities for senior citizens and PWDs. Now, others are also making the call. (Read: “Good morning, ma’am, sir!” Senior citizens and PWDs at your service at Jollibee’s Manila branches)

Recently, Mcdonald’s partnered with the city of Manila by signing a Memorandum of Agreement that will allow at least 40 branches in Manila to employ eligible senior citizens and PWDs.

With a total of 80 senior citizens and 40 PWDs to be employed around Manila, two seniors and 1 PWD will be placed in each branch.

Qualified applicants will have to undergo a training program approved by the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) of Manila and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Under the agreement, senior citizens will not be assigned to work for more than four hours per day for five days a week with shifts starting from 8 a.m. to 12 n.n. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Meanwhile, PWDs will perform similar work shifts as applied to regular crew members without exceeding eight hours a day. Currently, Mcdonald’s has over 30 employed senior citizens and PWD in different branches around the country.

With the participation of many food establishments in this movement, this will allow for our grandparents and PWDs to not only earn money to use in their everyday expenses but also gain experience in being a part of the workforce.

“We have seen their potential, capabilities, and commitment to providing great customer service. As we welcome our Manileño senior citizens and PWDs, we look forward to grow the alternative workforce and roll it out to more cities,” said Kenneth Yang, president and CEO of Mcdonald’s Philippines.
