On Mar. 15, the grounds of the Jaime Velasquez Park in Makati will be home once more to Art in the Park, the country’s most affordable art fair. This year’s event will be bringing together 56 galleries, independent art spaces, art collectives and student groups, each showcasing a wide array of artworks in different styles and forms.
The event is free of charge and prices for all of the artworks sold at the event are capped at P50,000. Beyond making different forms of art more accessible, Art in the Park is also a fundraiser: A portion of the sales are donated to the Museum Foundation of the Philippines (MFPI), in order to support its programs and projects for the National Museum of the Philippines.
The 14th edition of Art in the Park puts the spotlight on Richard Quebral, an Ilocos-based mixed media artist who specializes in whimsical vintage-inspired collages. One of his latest pieces, “Mang Eric’s Kawaiian Island Creations,” will be gracing the event’s postcards and prints, and his paintings will be available at the MFPI booth.
Visitors who want to strike up a conversation about art and the process behind it can look for Jackie Hontiveros Lozano, who will be holding a live portraiture demonstration. Throughout the event, she will be showcasing the process behind her Anonymous portrait style—which involves layered palette knife strokes.
Through his Garapata alter ego, visual artist Dex Fernandez will be installing the “Garapata Hatchery.” Here, visitors can participate in his art-making process by bringing a shirt, tote bag or any material that the artist’s quirky character can “infest” and latch on.
