3 spaces that have been converted into quarantine facilities

As the number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the country, hospitals and their medical staff have been struggling to accommodate patients—whether they are suspected to test positive for the virus or need treatment for other conditions. In an effort to decongest hospitals around the metro, local government units (LGUs) have been converting spaces such as schools and hotels to quarantine facilities as a way to better monitor suspected cases of COVID-19.

San Juan City Science High School

Due to its central location and proximity to the San Juan Medical Center, the city’s science high school had been converted into a quarantine facility for suspected COVID-19 cases. The building is also a “staging area,” meaning patients who have undergone testing will be asked to stay in this facility while waiting for results before they are admitted to a hospital.

The Makati Friendship Suites

Located in Barangay Cembo, the hotel has been converted into a 100-bed quarantine facility. According to Mayor Abby Binay, doctors and nurses from the Ospital ng Makati will be monitoring the health of patients in the facility, and medical equipment such as x-ray machines and cardiac monitors have been set up.

PhilSports Complex

One of the sports complexes to be used as a COVID-19 quarantine facility is the PhilSports Complex. Philippine Sports Commission chairman William “Butch” Ramirez notes that the venues to be used are the multi-purpose arena and the track oval. The sports venue is also newly renovated, and has a steady water supply and full air conditioning
