Over 100 rescued dogs may lose their home shelter as donations dwindle due to COVID-19

In Capas, Tarlac, a dog shelter home to over 100 rescued dogs is in danger of closing as COVID-19 has limited its donations. Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF), a non-profit animal welfare organization, has been rescuing dogs from illegal trade and slaughter for consumption since 2002. But their advocacy may come to an abrupt end as they now face dwindling supplies.

Atty. Heidi Caguioa, AKF’s treasurer, in a television interview said their donors whose businesses have been hit by the pandemic have since lessened their donations of essentials like dog food.

“If we are not able to get sufficient funds and support for our rescue operations, baka kami naman po talaga ang kailangang marescue at mapipilitan po kaming magsara,” Atty. Caguiao said.

According to their estimate, it takes P35,000 a month to feed the 140 rescues in the shelter. Making do with what they have right now, Atty. Caguiao said they may be forced to feed the dogs once a day. In fact, the last of their supplies are bought through credit.

Last weekend, AKF hosted a virtual adoption drive to find homes for some of the rescues.

“A few weeks ago we have utilized the livestreaming capability of the internet in promoting our rehoming program and we are happy to tell you that we have given ten rescued dogs a new loving home,” AKF said in their newsletter.

“AKF is still continuing its feeding of strays. There is no other option,” the shelter said in their newsletter.

Since the pandemic started, AKF has also been out in the streets feeding abandoned animals through their #WeFeedAsOne project.

AKF is accepting monetary donations through their PayPal account (akfrescues@gmail.com) and through the following bank accounts:

  • BDO
    Account name: Animal Kingdom Foundation
    Account number: 0069 1011 0365
