To help the tourism sector recover from the effects of the pandemic, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is considering implementing “travel bubbles” to allow tourists from countries with low numbers of COVID-19 cases to visit.
In a virtual presser, DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat explained they are considering travel bubbles so the tourism sector will not be limited to domestic visitors alone. However, foreign tourists will only be allowed to visit destinations located in areas that have low numbers of COVID-19 cases.
Romulo-Puyat also added that they will be consulting with local government units when opening areas for travel bubbles. As of writing, DOT is currently considering Bohol, Boracay and Palawan as areas for travel bubbles.
For areas under modified general community quarantine, travel services such as tourist destinations, travel agencies and tour operators have been allowed to resume operations at 50 percent capacity.
