As cases hit 70k, hospitals now required to allot 70% bed capacity for COVID-19 patients

As the country’s COVID-19 cases surpassed 70,000 yesterday, the Department of Health (DOH) is now mandating public and private hospitals to increase its bed allocation for patients that tested positive to coronavirus.

In an online media forum held earlier today, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the department amended its policy of hospital care capacity to address the surge in coronavirus cases.

Public hospitals should allocate as much as 70 percent of their total bed capacity from the previous 30 percent. Private hospitals are required to allocate as much as 30 percent of their total bed capacity. Vergeire added that they are working with agencies to provide incentives for private hospitals that comply.

Prior to this announcement, several hospitals in Metro Manila reported that they hit full capacity. As of writing, there are 70,764 confirmed cases nationwide with 23,281 recoveries and 1,837 deaths.
