After recommending biking as the preferred mode of transportation during the pandemic and planning a bike lane network in major cities, the government has marked the fourth Sunday of November as “National Bicycle Day.”

On Nov. 18, executive secretary Salvador Medialdea signed Proclamation 1052 by the President’s authority. The law stresses the need to curb air pollution by promoting non-motorized forms of transport, as well as eco-friendly technologies, systems and practices.

“National Bicycle Day” also wants to promote the physical health and well-being of Filipinos (especially since most of us have been cooped up at home for over half a year).

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will be taking the lead in the celebration and observance of “National Bicycle Day.” Both public and private organizations are also encouraged to take part in the festivities and provide the DENR the necessary support.

Let’s hope the government continues to put in place more policies to encourage environmentally friendly practices that would prevent more calamities from happening.
