Over the years, Earth Hour has come to acknowledge that the very thing that defines it—switching off the lights—may not be the way to go. Since its inception in 2007, the observance has evolved from a mere act of solidarity/symbolic action to a more holistic and multi-sectoral approach to mitigating climate change and raising awareness towards environmental issues.

This year, the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature in the Philippines is moving beyond the symbolic lights out and towards educating more people about the ways they can help the Earth through a virtual film fest.

“In light of global circumstances, our annual ‘switch off’ moment for #EarthHour has also changed. This year we turn a virtual spotlight on our planet, the issues we face, and our place within it all—with a watch party featuring WWF-Philippines’ Ambassadors and project teams,” said WWF.

On Mar. 27, Earth Hour PHlix will begin at 3:30 p.m. with a Wildlife Conservation video for kids, followed by an introduction to sustainable dining at 4:30 p.m., ending with a documentary on our plastic problem at 6:00 p.m.

The videos will be presented by WWF Ambassadors Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski and National Youth Ambassador Xia Vigor for wildlife conservation; Pia Wurtzback and KC Concepcion for sustainable dining; and Iza Calzado for plastic pollution.

Everyone can watch Earth Hour PHlix on WWF’s Facebook Live.
