Late last July, we reported on how environmental defenders continue to be threatened for their work, even amid the pandemic.

Environmental defenders, especially forest and wildlife rangers, are in need of help to continue doing their jobs. Luckily, there’s a way for us to lend our support from our own homes. If you’re a fitness enthusiast—or simply one who likes tracking your daily step count on your smartwatch—check out this challenge by the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation in Thailand.

Called the Run, Walk, Crawl for Rangers challenge, it simply asks participants to track their steps on their smart devices during the whole month of September. Those who place on designated lucky numbers on the leaderboard get a chance to win prizes worth over $45,000 (about P2.2 million).

To join, all you have to do is register and pay the $25 fee at Thai.fit. Funds raised from this entry fee will be divided among five wildlife ranger teams from all over the world:

  • Wildlife Alliance in Cambodia
  • Masungi Georeserve in the Philippines
  • HoneyGuide in Tanzania
  • Freeland Foundation in Thailand
  • Cardamom Tented Camp Concession rangers in Cambodia

Aside from helping these wildlife ranger teams, participants can win prizes such as reservations at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort, or Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in Thailand; Tiger Tops in Nepal, or Shinta Mani Angkor or Cardamom Tented Camp in Cambodia. A number of other prizes—which include products, accommodations, tours, and the like—can be accessed here along with their corresponding winning leaderboard positions, should you want to target specific prizes.

The competition runs from Sept. 1 to 30.
