Have you ever wondered what the Big Kahuna Burger from Quentin Tarantino’s films tastes like? How about the Breakfast Dessert Pasta from Elf and Spongebob Squarepants’ Krabby Patty?
Well, I have and (it’s kind of dumb but) sometimes I feel sad thinking I’ll never get to savor the same darn good stuff from these fictional worlds.
However, this YouTube channel is a saving grace.
Binging with Babish recreates and makes video tutorials of recipes from iconic films and TV series. Andrew Rea, the owner of the forearms making wonders at his charming kitchen in the videos, is a chef and a filmmaker. His channel is what he considers “the realization of a young(ish) man’s dream to combine his love of film and cooking, and to have some fun in the process.”
Here are some recipes Rea’s recreated and filmed:
Pulp Fiction’s Big Kahuna Burger
Samuel L. Jackson’s character in Pulp Fiction thinks highly of this Hawaiian burger, it making him blurted, “It is a tasty burger!” and claimed it’s “the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast.” While I don’t agree with the latter statement, I’d still eat a Kahuna for breakfast, especially this one with double-stacked beef topped with caramelized pineapple and onion.
Ratatouille’‘s Ratatouille
In the scene where Remy (yes, the rat’s name in the movie is Remy, not Ratatouille) served this reinvention of confit byaldi to the food critic, the “peasant dish” transported the critic to his childhood and changed his present life in a way. It also proved that eating is more than just a chore, but an experience.
Man, who doesn’t want to be transported to their childhood?
Rick and Morty’‘s Szechuan Sauce
On June 19, 1998, McDonald’s served Szechuan sauce with the McNuggets as a part of their promotional campaign for Disney’s Mulan. Last April, the sauce became famous again because of a reference made by Rick and Morty. Although Rea couldn’t remember what the sauce tasted like because he was only nine when it came out, he still got to recreate it with some help from people online.
Matilda’s Chocolate Cake
Ah, this is from a disturbing scene from Matilda. The chocolate cake in the scene where the headmistress of Matilda’s primary school humiliated a boy named Bruce looks tempting. The headmistress made Bruce eat the cake and the boy finished the platter, licked the remaining chunks of chocolate fudge, and left it almost clean. But Rea’s recreation of the chocolate cake is too real, and it might not be, um, for nonfictional people.
Spongebob Squarepants’ Krabby Patty
The cartoon’s villain Plankton would go to great lengths just to steal this burger’s recipe. Spongebob devotes his life to protecting it and cooking it in Krusty Krabs. Squidward Tentacles became addicted to this and his legs exploded because of overeating.
Rea recreated this “not recreate-able” food with “a bit of science, a bit of whimsy, and a whole lot of wanton conjecture.” He eventually built an umami burger using ingredients from the ocean.
