What causes a brain aneurysm?

A person may inherit the tendency to form aneurysms or develop an aneurysm because of atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the arteries) and aging. But there are more risk factors you should be aware of, especially if it’s a part of your lifestyle.

Family history. People who have a family history of brain aneurysms are more likely to develop it than those who don’t.

High blood pressure. If hypertension runs in the family or you happen to develop it, the risk of getting a brain aneurysm is greater. It happens when the force of your blood that travels through your blood vessels is measured by how much pressure it puts on your artery walls. The normal blood pressure for adults is at 112/80 mm HG or below, but note that a higher than normal blood pressure doesn’t necessarily put you at risk for an aneurysm.

Gender. According to a study, subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAH) are more likely to develop in women than in men. This is thought to be a result of both hormonal influences and variation in wall shear stress.
