San Beda College, who? The Roman Catholic college run by the Benedictine monks was just granted university status from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
The Bedan, the official publication of San Beda College of Arts and Sciences, also confirmed the news on Tuesday morning, Feb. 6 on their official Twitter page.
Congratulations, San Beda University!
This year marks the 117th year since the Benedictine monks founded San Beda. Its main campus stands in the midst of the university belt in Mendiola, Manila. Its other campuses are located in Taytay, Rizal and Alabang, Muntinlupa.
University status is the highest honor reserved for higher education institutions “which have proven their excellence in the areas of instruction, research, and extension.”
To be granted university status, a higher education institution should meet CHED’s requirements listed in its manual of regulations. Among these requirements are: a credible outreach program, an adequately funded research program, Level III accreditation for any one of its graduate programs, and Level III accreditation for at least two of its undergraduate programs.
As of Feb. 6, CHED and San Beda University have yet to release their statements. Though, the university, from students to staff, happily rejoices at its newly acquired title.
Notable alumni from San Beda University are Vice President Leni Robredo (MBA), Senator Leila de Lima (LI.B), actor Aga Muhlach (BSC), and President Rodrigo Duterte (LI.B).
