If like me, you still managed to miss this year’s Cinemalaya online despite the abundance of time in our hands (I even rented it on Vimeo! I’m sorry, film gods), here’s some good news: Tanghalang Pilipino is making one of this year’s most notable short films available for streaming online—for free!
[READ: 8 short films to check out from Cinemalaya’s roster of 70+ films this 2020]“Heneral Rizal,” Tanghalang Pilipino’s first venture into the annual film festival is now available on YouTube. The Cultural Center of the Philippines’ resident theater group is streaming it online as part of its PangsamanTanghalan lineup.
The short film directed by chuck Gutierrez is based on Dr. Floro Quibuyen’s story about the national hero’s brother Paciano (played by TP’s artistic director Nanding Josef) who airs out his hopes, dreams and frustrations about the country.
Our managing editor Pau Miranda, on a review of this short film, writes, “Most of his grievances are familiar, echoing other recent historical films, but when he talked about how we Filipinos (and they, ilustrados) are so concerned about what foreigners (particularly Westerners) think about ourselves—it hit hard.”
