No need to fly to L.A. for rich, flaky cheese rolls because these local bakers can compete

If you’ve ever been to L.A., Porto’s cheese rolls are the epitome of the ultimate cheesy pastry. The Cuban bakery’s take on the cheese roll is almost the polar opposite of what Filipinos usually associate with the snack.

When Filipinos think of cheese rolls, what usually comes to mind is soft, pillowy bread filled with cheese and topped with a sprinkle of sugar that is baked to perfection. Those types of cheese rolls are absolutely delicious and make for a wonderful, light merienda. Porto’s cheese rolls, on the other hand, are rich, flaky, buttery, sweet and fall on the more hearty side of things.

If you’re missing the famous L.A. pastry, or if you’ve never had it and just want to give it a try, here are some cheese puffs you can get delivered at home:

Buttery & Co’s Buttery’s Puff

If you’re ordering these flaky, cheesy delights from Buttery & Co, double check your order and specify that you’d like to get their Buttery’s Puff. Buttery & Co also sells the Filipino-style cheese roll (which was just as tasty, but also a lesson learned).

Nothing But Jill

Aside from Porto’s famous cheese rolls, Nothing But Jill also came up with their very own version of the Cuban bakery’s guava strudels (they even look the part). Their origin story may be linked with Porto’s but their pastries are delicious in their own right.

Cheese Rolls by Miss J

Miss J’s cheese rolls also took their cue from Porto’s bakery. These cheesy, tangy, sweet and light delights are the perfect addition to any brunch, afternoon merienda or even midnight snack. If you want a taste of these rolls, you have to be quick though. They only open a limited number of slots per day.

Conti’s Cheese Puffs

Although Conti’s is known for their cakes and entrées, you definitely should not miss out on their cheese puffs. Their recipe is light, flaky with just the right amount of sweetness. Best of all, you can order this in a hurry when the cheese roll cravings get a bit too real.

Conti’s Cheese Puffs are available on the Grab app
