Michelle Obama’s Netflix cooking show wants to teach kids better eating habits

What’s the best way to instill better eating habits in children?

If you’ve tried to look for answers to that question, you might have tried preparing a few meals with your kids by now. Maybe you’ve adopted the eating habits you want your kids to have or tried to veer conversations about food towards the positive.

On days when you find yourself feeling lost about what else to teach your kids about food, however, Michelle Obama’s new show might help.

“Waffles + Mochi” is a cooking show hosted by America’s former First Lady, and created by the same team behind the show “Chef’s Table.” Here, Obama plays a supermarket owner accompanied by Waffle, a blue puppet with a waffle sticking out of her fuzzy white hair, and Mochi, a small pink rice cake puppet.

“In many ways, this show is an extension of my work to support children’s health as First Lady,” Obama said of the show. “To be quite honest, I wish a program like this had been around when my girls were young.”

“I also know that this is a difficult time for so many families, and I’m hopeful that this delightful show can bring a bit of light and laughter to homes around the world,” she added.

Over the course of 10 episodes, Obama, Waffles and Mochi visit restaurants, kitchens and farms around the world with the help of their flying shopping cart. Through a mix of animation and shots from different cities, the puppets learn more about different cultures and cuisines.

The show will also feature special guest chefs like World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés, James Beard Award-winning author Samin Nosrat and Italian restaurateur Massimo Bottura of the Michelin-starred restaurant Osteria Francescana.

“Waffles + Mochi” will be available for streaming on Netflix globally on Mar. 16.
