Celebrate Women’s Month with these female-centered films

Corresponding with International Women’s Day on Mar. 8, the whole month of March is about putting the spotlight on women and their contributions to the society today and throughout the history.

To celebrate, the University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI) is screening diverse women-centered cinema with films by Irene Villamor (Meet Me in St. Gallen, Camp Sawi), Maricel Cabrera-Cariaga (Pitong Kabang Palay), Sigrid Andrea Bernardo (Lorna, Kita Kita), Ramona Diaz (Motherland), and Jun Robles Lana (Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes).

There will also be free film festivals from the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Embassy of Israel, and Haruki Murakami Festival from Japan Foundation.

Camp Sawi (2016)

Dir. Irene Villamor. Camp Sawi tells the story of five brokenhearted women who end up at a resort that helps people recover from painful love experiences.

Meet Me in St. Gallen (2018)


Dir. Irene Villamor. This film follows the story of Celeste and Jesse who end up unexpectedly meeting again in St. Gallen, Switzerland years after having a one-night stand.

Pitong Kabang Palay (2016)

Dir. Maricel Cabrera-Cariaga. This award-winning movie is about the dela Cruz family who lives a simple, frugal life on the rice fields of Isabela. Everyone in the family is working hard to make ends meet until an inevitable departure leaves them all affected.

Motherland (2016)

Dir. Ramona DiazMotherland is an award-winning documentary about the world’s busiest maternity hospital: Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila.

Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes

Dir. Jun Robles Lana. This film is about two devoted wives who got cheated on by their husbands who turn out to be gay.
