This year’s Met Gala attendees really upped the ante with their looks paying homage to the theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” From Rihanna’s show-stopping pope-inspired Margiela frock to Zendaya’s chainmail and armor dress ode to Joan of Arc designed by one of this year’s hosts, Donatella Versace, the annual fund-raising event was nothing short of extravagant.
But the glitzy extravaganza of the red carpet arrivals aside, some celebrities opted to channel a greener cause on their sleeves. Gisele Bündchen and Miley Cyrus donned a designer dress by Versace and Stella McCartney respectively, which are fashion-forward just as they are eco-friendly. They’re inspired by the Green Carpet Challenge, a movement started by Livia Firth in partnership with consulting brand Eco-Age, which is committed to promoting sustainability within fashion business.
According to Eco-Age’s Instagram, Bündchen, who is no stranger to the cause, wore a dress which construction—fabric, lining, and threads—was made entirely of organic silk. The zipper and all the inner materials were made out of organic cotton, recycled plastic and metal components such as lead, nickel, colorants that are chemical-free.
Cyrus, on the other hand, was dressed by English designer and sustainability advocate Stella McCartney. In an interview, the singer and actress expressed the need for a more environmental-friendly approach to red-carpet dressing. “I think this moment can be about so many different things and for me, I want to bring a message which is veganism and that there doesn’t have to be torture in fabulous fashion,” she said.
The Green Carpet Challenge encourages celebrities and public figures to wear eco-friendly designs, as well as re-wear the dresses and other articles they have been previously photographed in on the red carpet.
Firth, herself, a Met Gala constant, wore a Giambattista Valli dress made from Taroni silk—both brands are associated with Eco-Age’s cause. She accentuated her look with a clutch from Kayu, which is known for its locally-made and sourced handbags, and Roger Vivier shoes that she debuted at the 2011 Oscars.
