Filipinos and reading go together like wine and cheese. Remember, second only to the U.S., the Philippines is the most represented country on Wattpad, responsible for 20% of the ebook site’s traffic. Some people might pooh-pooh this information because of the quality of content on that site, but it’s undeniable: a lot of Filipinos are reading. If you need more proof, remember all that outrage when Filipinos thought the government was coming for our book industry?
With a nation of voracious readers like ours, it’s only appropriate to honor the people behind the books we read. Since 2008, the National Book Development Board (the government agency devoted to developing the country’s publishing industry) has been bestowing awards to Filipino authors, publishers, and designers for their achievements in book publishing. They curate their list of winners with the Manila Critics Circle, an organization of professional critics and columnists which gave out the awards from 1982 to 2008 before the NBDB took over. For the Philippine National Book Awards’ 37th running, the NBDB picked out books released in 2017.
