Cebu has long been known for a number of things: food, tourism, and design foremost among them.
Last Wednesday, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) just recognized the Queen City of the South as the second city in the country with a “Creative City” designation, specifically for the field of design.
Cebu joins 65 other cities around the world as new members of the Creative City network. According to a report by the Cebu Daily News, Unesco brings these creative cities together to work “towards a common mission, which is to place creativity and the creative economy at the core of the urban developments to make cities safe, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.”
This mission, the report says, is aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The first Philippine city to join this network is Baguio in 2017, under the Crafts and Folk category. Aside this and design, other categories include gastronomy, literature, film, music, and media arts.
