Education is costly, that’s something that we can all agree on. Even if you take tuition out of the equation, just the act of getting to class takes mad moolah if you have to commute everyday. (Read: How much money are we losing every day because of traffic?) Your daily expenses will pile up, especially if you need to take the train (or ride Grab!). Even if you live just one LRT stop away from your school, you’ll still end up paying close to P5,000 every year because of your daily back and forth.
To help students mitigate their expenses, the House of Representatives just approved on second reading the House Bill 8885 or the “Student Fare Discount Act,” which will expand the coverage of the 20 percent student fare discount to all modes of transportation. Currently, the discount only covers land transportation as mandated by the LTFRB.
If the bill is signed into law, students will be able to get a discount on public transportation services such as transport network vehicles, the Metro Rail Transit, Light Rail Transit, Philippine National Railways, and even maritime vessels and planes.
The Senate version of the bill was passed last October, which means you can expect to see the discount enacted pretty soon.
