Ta Ke Ho Me Sushi shows that sushi can be cheap—and still be good

If you couldn’t tell from all our articles on Japanese food, Nolisoli.ph is pretty fond of sushi. And who wouldn’t be? It’s uncomplicated, filling, has rice (!), and still leaves room for creativity. Aside from ramen, sushi’s got to be one of the most quintessentially Japanese dish out there.

But as accessible sushi might be taste-wise, the same isn’t the case for its price point. A plate of six can easily over P200, and any cheaper you’ll be sacrificing quality for frugality. We’re pretty adventurous here food-wise, so we’ve had our fair share of disappointing P100 sushi and large bilaos with acceptable to sub-par rolls. When someone says the phrase “take out sushi,” we get excited because it’s sushi, not because we expect it to be a great gastronomic experience.

Ta Ke Ho Me sells good sushi that won’t hurt your wallet

This is exactly what couple Miguel Librojo and Kelly Parreno decided to tackle head on with their stand Ta Ke Ho Me Sushi. “We at Ta Ke Me Ho Me Sushi believe that great Japanese food need not be expensive,” says Librojo. That’s why P99 can already get you a box of 8 rolls.

The TKHM roll isn’t your typical sushi: It’s deep fried and contains cheese

One of the rolls you need to try is their signature TKHM roll. Sushi purists, give it a chance: It’s a deep fried sushi roll containing smoked salmon, cream cheese, and bonito. You can also get their bacon bomb from their hot sushi menu for P99. It’s also a deep fried sushi, but it’s notable for being wrapped in bacon.

The couple behind Ta Ke Me Ho Me Sushi also know that sushi is a huge party favorite, which is why they’ve priced their sushi boxes to be friendly for sharing. Aside from the 8 pieces box, you can get 24 (P295), 40 (P489), and even 80 (P969) pieces. That’s a pretty huge steal for good sushi.

Since opening in 2016 at their humble stand in Sgt. Esguerra, Quezon City, Ta Ke Me Ho Me Sushi has grown nine more branches: Lilac, Marikina; SM North Edsa; SM City Sta. Mesa; SM Southmall; SM Olongapo; Ayala Malls Cloverleaf; Ayala Marquee Mall; Robinsons Manila; and Robinson Galleria. They’ll soon be opening branches in SM San Jose del Monte Bulacan and SM Fairview.
