Good news: You can now apply or renew your car registration and driver’s license online through the Land Transportation Office (LTO) online portal.
As a continuing measure to curb the spread of COVID-19, LTO is helping ease car registration and license application by directing some of its services online through its newly-launched website.
Giving 24/7 access to motorists’ records via computer, tablet or smartphone, LTO’s new system enables applicants to register, book an appointment and make cashless payments for their transactions before heading to an LTO branch office.
The portal’s services also include paying for fines and other fees, and the data center in Manila can handle over a million transactions per day, according to LTO. However, motorists have to sign up as a client in the portal first before gaining access to the site for security measures.
Since the portal contains personal information, netizens are on high alert regarding data security and privacy in line with recent events. Assuring the safety of the online system which was developed with identification company Dermalog, LTO said they are using an Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) with face and fingerprint identification to prevent false or double identities.
“The new LTO portal is one of the key steps on our way to becoming a frontline government agency showcasing fast and efficient public service for a progressive land transport sector,” said LTO chief and Transportation Assistant Secretary Edgar Galvante.
Upon the imposition of the general community quarantine, some LTO offices have resumed its operations in May. The office also extended the validity of drivers’ licenses that expired during the quarantine period for an additional duration of two months on May 8, and no penalty will be charged for late renewal.
