Ube pandesal has become a ube-quitous quarantine food. Forget banana bread, practically every budding online entrepreneur starts with that purple crusty bread filled either with velvety ube halaya or cheese—in some cases, both.

Now, we are not saying boycott these small businesses—we are all for supporting entrepreneurs. What we’re saying is: There’s a whole ube universe out there waiting to be explored. And with time on our hands, many home bakers, cooks and food brands are making uber-creative inventions with this humble tuber.

Let’s get to know these out-of-the-box ube creations, shall we?

It has the same velvety texture unique to the Basque dessert but with a distinct purple yam flavor.

We know ube goes well with macapuno—a genetically-different young coconut—so it’s no surprise that buko pie with purple yam just makes delectable sense.

Ube cocktail

No, ube is not just for desserts, this ube-flavored concoction proves.

Ube turon

Now for a fried dessert, try this ube halaya-filled turon. Banana optional

Ube bibingka

We love kakanin so naturally this purple bibingka—with cheese, of course—makes it to this list.

Banana-ube bread

Don’t count banana bread out just yet as it still has tricks up its sleeve aka an ube filling

Ube sourdough

Even your beloved quarantine baking essential sourdough could use a little color—purple in this case

Ube brioche

Told you, there’s more to ube-flavored baked goods than ube pandesal

Ube Spanish bread

Another neighborhood bakery staple we love, now stuffed with halaya

Ube rolls

Move over, cinnamon rolls!

Coffee-crusted ube buns

Ube pairs well with coffee? Who knew?

Ube tapioca pearls

ube/purple yam boba with earl grey milk tea! I used about 180g of ube and 60g of tapioca starch so just remember the 3:1 ratio of ube to starch. if you guys are familiar with chè trôi nước, this is same idea but just sized into lil boba bbs Method 1. steam ube, mash until smooth 2. add tapioca starch, a couple tsps of cold water (adjust as necessary), and sugar to your liking 3. knead until a dough forms, it shouldn’t stick to your hands 4. form into desired shape, place in a bowl with tapioca starch so they don’t stick together 5. bring water to a boil, place ube boba in pot and move to in an ice cold water bath when they float to the top 6. make a brown sugar/honey syrup for them to sit in, then enjoy with your fav bev 🙂 . . . . #foodstyling #culinary #foodphotography #foodgram #instaeats #food #buzzfeast #mywilliamssonoma #nytcooking #bonappetit #quarantinecooking #munchies #foodie #homecook #homecooking #thewayweeat #thekitchn #feedfeed #chef #foodisart #lifestyle #madewithlove #foodart #tastecooking #ube #purpleyam #ubeboba #boba #milktea #chetroinuoc
