From Fernando Zobel works to painted-over photographs: The art exhibits to help you kick off 2021

  • The way we consume photos and perceive time and space have changed a lot over the past decade

If we’re being honest, we don’t think we’d have gotten through the year without the virtual museum tours and art exhibits that kept us entertained and inspired during our time indoors.

This year, however, we’re looking forward to revisiting some of our favorite art galleries (while following safety protocols, of course). Over the past year, local artists have been using their craft to interpret and examine the numerous changes society has seen over the last decade—and showcasing them to the public to spark conversation.

So, if you’re looking for a change of scenery, start making reservations for these exhibits today:

Displace, Embody, UP Vargas Museum

Dec. 17 2020 – Feb 13

In collaboration with Thailand’s Aura Contemporary Art Foundation, UP Vargas Museum’s latest exhibit explores how bodies, species, and spaces transform according to their locations and their future. “Displace, Embody” explores issues brought by boundaries and restrictions by showing images of photo manipulation and creatures morphing through textiles.

Physical visits to the exhibit may be arranged by contacting [email protected] or its Facebook page. Walk-in visitors will not be allowed.

Considered Gestures, Silverlens Galleries

Jan. 9 – Feb. 6

Curated by Yael Buencamino, “Considered Gestures” traces how mediums and processes become significant to the subjects represented in an art piece. To achieve this, works from Fernando Zobel and Jose Joya and Arturo Luz are displayed alongside works from contemporary local artists—representing how their works influence how we perceive art today.

The exhibition catalog for “Considered Gestures” is available online. Physical viewings can be scheduled through the Silverlens Galleries website.

Jan. 16 – Feb. 6

How has the way we look at photos changed through the years? Photographer Mark Nicdao answers this question through his latest exhibit, where he binds frames and printed photographs from magazines on canvas, and paints over them with acrylic to show how our screens affect our conscious and subconscious.

“Portal 3.125 “mindframe,” can be viewed at Artinformal Makati’s Gallery 1. Walk-in visitors are welcome.

Sapience, Modeka Creative Space

Jan. 23 – Feb. 20

If there’s anything art history has taught us, it’s that tumultuous times lead to new ways of thinking. To help us move forward in 2021, “Sapience” is bringing together 40 painters, sculptors and other artists to record and examine how our perceptions of time and space have changed, the role of technology, and finding humor in the mundane.

“Sapience” can be viewed at the Modeka Experiences website. For private viewings, contact [email protected] or 0956-1749185.
