DJ-approved songs for every kind of Valentine’s Day

We’ve been made to believe Valentine’s Day is a legitimate holiday (it is at best a capitalist one). Nonetheless, just as with “love,” there are many ways to celebrate/undermine/low-key observe/all together ignore it—and, no, you don’t have to be in love to do most of these. You can be an anti-establishment VDay person or a hardcore hearts’ day apologist, pick your poison. 

But if there’s anything we take away from it, it’s the bangers that it (love or lack thereof) birthed. From anthems of falling into the deep trance of romantic woes to the ballads of an unrequited, unattached, or self-sufficient lover, there’s a song to describe every feeling.

So we asked seven of Manila’s beloved DJs about their picks, for when you’re tired of listening to the same sappy songs.

What’s your relationship with Valentine’s Day like?

I would say it’s pretty good. I think it can apply to all types of love, not just romantic. When I was a kid I would get Valentine’s Day gifts for my parents. Something simple like chocolate or a flower. And even when I was single I never rejected it or made fun of people who wanted to celebrate.

What’s the best VDay gift for you?

For me, I really enjoy spending quality time on Valentine’s Day whether it’s a weekend trip away, a nice dinner, or a movie date.

Any plans for VDay weekend?

This Valentine’s Day weekend, I’ll actually be at the Unknwn’s 7th anniversary, playing a very special set. I’m looking forward to a full day of great music, food, and company. My husband and I will also be checked in at a hotel near the venue. We love a good staycation.

My usual tradition is giving flowers to my mom, my daughter, and my girlfriend.

Any plans for VDay weekend?

I have a gig on Saturday night so I’ll probably “celebrate” VDay with my BF on Sunday, watching True Crime docus while snuggling with our dogs and binging out on deliveries.

What’s your relationship with Valentine’s Day like?

While I’m not a fan of the pressure that comes with having to plan for an arbitrary holiday; I do like the idea of setting aside time to be present and show appreciation for your partner.

We’re likely to cook our favorite pasta, order our favorite pizza, and watch our favorite anti-Vday films “Audition,” “Possession,” and “Eyes Wide Shut.”
