In 2019, The Test Kitchen’s comeback was one that many were clamoring for. Chef Josh Boutwood, who proved his culinary genius through The Test Kitchen’s first endeavor during 2017, decided to revamp his restaurant into something that was still reminiscent of its former glory, but amped up with more of Boutwood and his team’s culinary skill and knowledge.
Now, The Test Kitchen has reinvented itself yet again to accommodate the current social situation. The restaurant has transformed four of their dishes into ready-to-cook home kits for the customers to enjoy at the comfort of their own dining tables and to also try out their hand in cooking these fine, gourmet dishes as well.
Starting tomorrow, May 7, you’ll be able to order the restaurant’s poached salmon, ribeye steak, smoked pork neck steak and truffle roast chicken. The ingredients are packed in air-tight vacuum bags that come with an instructional guide on how to cook and reheat it. On top of that, Boutwood and his team went the extra mile and placed a QR code that leads you to a YouTube video tutorial on how to cook these meals the way The Test Kitchen would. Chef Boutwood’s British accent is a pretty sweet bonus too.
With the QR code system and video tutorials, The Test Kitchen team made it as easy as possible for their customers to cook the meals at home. Chef Boutwood and his team of three (Paulo Bayani, Rose de Roxas and John Pangantihon) set up their own makeshift studio in their kitchen to record the videos, with Boutwood himself editing and even color grading the videos afterwards.
“A lot of people are stuck at home with nothing to do but cook. Although, sometimes that’s not the case. Some still have their kids going around and they may not have the time or patience to get through the recipe card. What they can do is just scan the QR code, listen and follow instructions,” Boutwood said. “We want to make it as easy as possible for the customers to understand how to accomplish the dishes.”
Just as well, The Test Kitchen doesn’t forego its dedication to serving quality ingredients with these ready-to-cook home kits. In fact, it has the same side dishes you’d get if you were just at the restaurant. The truffle chicken comes with parmesan mashed potatoes and caraway roasted carrots and the smoked pork steak neck is paired with tomato salad and roasted marble potatoes. For the ribeye steak, you’ll have parmesan mashed potatoes and creamed spinach as well. Meanwhile, the poached salmon will be placed on top of their lemon saffron risotto and drizzled with smoked pork shoulder sauce.
In the following days, The Test Kitchen is planning to add four more dishes to the menu—to ensure that there’s a variety of meats and vegetables to choose from. Much like the restaurant’s concept of an ever-changing daily menu, the home kits will also be changing every now and then to make sure that guests have options.
