After the cancellation of the UP College Admissions Test (UPCAT) and a highly debated admissions process, the University of the Philippines (UP) has announced that it will be accepting incoming freshman applications starting today, Jan. 7.
What aspiring iskolars ng bayan can expect in lieu of the UPCAT is a modified admissions program, which takes a look at their high school performance to see if they’ll make the cut for the upcoming academic year.
“This [admissions process] includes an additional assessment of incoming first-year students by academic units to qualify for a degree program, if deemed necessary. Applicants will be notified of such assessment or other additional requirements after the evaluation of their high school records,” the announcement read.
“Therefore, to select incoming first-year students who qualify for a degree program, UP must strictly assess the applicants’ high school grades,” the announcement continued.

While UP is encouraging online applications, it also acknowledged the major difficulties and “technological limitations” of completing a 100 percent online application in some areas. It will continue “to coordinate with concerned high schools for alternative modes of submission,” the state university added.
