How do you know Christmas is just ‘round the corner? There are tell-tale signs—even in quarantine. Jose Mari Chan blasting, Christmas countdowns everywhere and the presence of bibingka and puto bumbong stalls to signal the start of Simbang Gabi (dawn Masses).
Lord knows how and why these two kakanin have become synonymous with Simbang Gabi. Hey, we actually do know! It has something to do with “a compromise” between friars and farmers, who would feast on these humble rice cakes prior to attending Miso de Gallo at dawn and before tending their field.

This year, the setup and the kakanin are a little different. The mass is still on but with churches in limited capacity. Oh and the bibingka and puto bumbong? Well, while stalls may or may not be allowed around churches, innovators have found a way to make the culinary experience memorable this year.
Enter bibingka and puto bumbong con Nutella.
Iconic Filipino restaurant Via Mare has teamed up with the hazelnut cocoa spread brand to spruce up our favorite Christmas kakanin.
Nutella is bringing its ingenious take on bibingka and puto bumbong in its All-Day Breakfast truck, a pop-up store that will drive around Metro Manila throughout December in these locations:
Dec. 17 – Town and Country Executive Village
Dec. 18 – Forbes Town, Bonifacio Global City
Dec. 19-20 – Eastwood Mall Open Park
Both Nutella-infused kakanin will also be available for home delivery via viamare.com.ph/order-online.
