The main selling, or clicking, point that I thought about for this article was that these documentaries are probably the closest thing we could get to seeing Mother Nature in all her glory. What with the rapid urbanization of our lives, disappearing ecosystems and endangered wildlife.
But evidently, a more proactive cause is to use these true-to-life footage as a wakeup call to do something about the issues surrounding nature. So, I don’t know, maybe you could skip watching vlogs and Instagram Stories tonight to watch these documentaries about the world we live in.
Our Planet
“Our Planet” is a recently debuted eight-part docuseries that explores the rich biodiversity of the seven continents and what makes each one unique. The docuseries gives off a once-upon-a-time setting as it is narrated by English broadcaster David Attenborough and is filled with extremely nuanced and almost surreal shots of countless habitats. As Attenborough declares from the start that: “This is a story about our planet and how we can make it thrive.”
Night on Earth
With footage of numerous animals and landscapes from across the globe in an unexplored and notorious light, “Night on Earth” by Netflix Originals aims to unveil the hidden sides of the world through night vision technology.
Plastic Ocean
Craig Leeson’s “A Plastic Ocean” from 2016 is still a deeply haunting piece and proof of just how modernization in the form of plastic massivel damages the environment. Here you will fully grasp how overuse of this material pollutes the oceans, consequently killing wildlife and resources and alarmingly seeping into the very things we consume.
Chasing Coral
“Chasing Coral” captures the beauty of one of the most sublime but important creatures in the ocean. If you didn’t know, corals protect marine ecosystems and coastlines from the damaging effects of waves and tropical storms. The documentary also sheds light on the threats to these fundamental animals as they also put out a time lapse of the world’s largest coral bleaching event.
Decoding the Weather Machine
Isn’t it alarming how the weather these days could easily go from hot and sunny to a violent rainstorm in a matter of hours? “Decoding the Weather Machine” takes up this collective concern to show us why this might be happening and where it’s headed. From Greenland’s ice sheet to the desserts of Australia, the documentary shows how scientists are delving into the most evident planetary crisis: climate change. As one scientist says, “What gives me hope is that we understand this, so we actually can do something about it.”
Terra
“Terra” is a well-crafted documentary-essay that puts forward how animals have become refugees in a world we share with them and this is evidently due to the fact that animals are being hunted down and slaughtered to feed humans. Even as a moderate meat eater, I found this fact hard to deal with but that’s just how it should be, these things should inspire us to be better.
72 Cutest Animals
And we’re putting this feel-good documentary here to remind you that there’s more cute animals than just cats and dogs; they’re also not the only ones worth taking care of. What’s more is that this documentary doesn’t measure cuteness according to how these animals look but through their quirks and how they behave.
